EXODUS / Dec. 28, 2016

Since 2011, millions of people have fled their homes in Syria and other countries besieged by violence, helping to fuel Europe’s largest refugee and migrant crisis since World War II.

At FRONTLINE, we’ve been reporting on this crisis, its causes and its impact for years.

Tonight, though, we’ll tell this story in a new way.

Exodus, our two-hour documentary premiering at a special time (9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST), draws on camera and smartphone footage filmed by refugees and migrants themselves — on sinking dinghies attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, inside the trucks of smugglers, and in the countries they hope to call home.

From a young Syrian man named Hassan who was once an English teacher in Damascus, to Isra’a, a Syrian girl who fled Aleppo with her family after her home was bombed, to Alaigie, a Gambian man who dreams of lifting his brothers and sisters out of poverty, tonight’s documentary is an unforgettable, first-hand look at the choices migrants and refugees face.

It’s vivid, gripping and impossible to forget. Newsday says it has “a deeply human touch” and gives it an A+. I hope you’ll watch. (Check your local PBS station for exact Exodus airtimes, or stream it online.)

Finally, as 2016 draws to a close, I want to thank you for supporting FRONTLINE in telling stories like this — year in, year out. All of us are deeply grateful.
